30 CRT TVs as one image: a vintage video wall in action

In our warehouse we stacked 30 vintage tube TVs and aligned them so that together they show one big 16:9 image.

Old Sony PVM and JVC studio monitors, driven by our own software. Watch the result below.

What do you see in the video?

A wall of 30 old televisions that behaves like one screen.

Usually every TV in a video wall plays its own clip, or all screens show the same image. This is different: one HDMI source is spread across all 30 tubes, so the image flows from screen to screen.

Because the TVs come in different sizes and have bezels between them, the image isn't seamless like on an LED wall. That's exactly what gives it its raw, analogue look: scanlines, colour differences and a bit of glow on every screen.

One image across 30 screens

For this setup we use our own software. It cuts the incoming 16:9 image into pieces and sends each piece to the TV in that spot of the wall.

That way we can match the layout exactly to how the TVs are stacked, even when the screens aren't all the same size. The result: one image that flows neatly across the whole wall.

Sony PVM and JVC studio monitors

The wall is made of old Sony PVM and JVC monitors and TVs. Professional tubes that used to sit in TV studios and editing suites.

They're sturdy, built to run for long hours and have a recognisable, crisp CRT look. That makes them ideal for a video wall that stands out at a festival, in a music video or at a trade fair.

Frequently asked questions about this CRT video wall

Can I rent this video wall?

Yes. We rent out CRT video walls in different sizes, from 16 to 32 TVs and larger on request. Get in touch to discuss the options.

Can I show my own image or video?

Yes. You can supply your own videos, or connect an HDMI source such as a laptop or a VJ setup. The image is then spread across all the TVs.

Can a VJ play live content on the video wall?

Yes. A VJ can put live visuals on the wall via HDMI, just like we did for our project in the Lima tent at Lowlands.

Can every TV play its own clip as well?

Yes. Besides one continuous image, we can give every TV its own video, or mix between the two. We tailor it to what you want to show.
