Case study
Lowlands: a video wall of 87 TVs around the DJ booth in the Lima tent
For the Lima tent at Lowlands we built a video wall (TV wall) of 87 televisions, set up around the DJ booth on stage.
The screens showed live VJ content by VJ Switchdoctor, while Menno de Meester and DJ Brutus got the crowd in the tent dancing.
A TV wall as the backdrop for the DJ booth
The Lima tent at Lowlands wanted a video wall that stands out, without getting in the DJs' way.
Instead of a slick LED wall, they went for a TV wall of individual televisions: every screen with its own colour, brightness and slight distortion. That raw, analogue look suits the character of the tent and instantly gives the stage a recognisable vibe of its own.
We built the video wall around the DJ booth, so the installation became part of the stage itself instead of a separate screen behind it.
87 TVs around the DJs
In total, 87 televisions were set up around the DJ booth: a video wall that almost literally surrounded the DJs. That made the booth itself part of the stage design, and the crowd wasn't looking at one screen but at a fully stacked TV wall.
Building the screens around the booth also makes for an interesting view from the sides of the tent. There's no 'blind spot': wherever you stand, you're looking at a wall of televisions.
Live VJ content by VJ Switchdoctor
The content on the 87 screens was mixed live by VJ Switchdoctor. Instead of a fixed loop, the crowd got ever-changing visuals, tuned live to the music and the energy in the tent.
The VJ hooked his set-up into our installation via HDMI, so his visuals appeared directly and without delay across the entire video wall.
That instantly sets a video wall like this apart from a standard screen set-up: the TV wall moves along with the set, instead of just playing a fixed clip.
Menno de Meester & DJ Brutus in the Lima tent
The video wall was there during the sets of Menno de Meester and DJ Brutus, who got the crowd in the Lima tent dancing. The TV wall gave the stage an extra layer of atmosphere and recognisability, without getting in the artists' way.
87 screens driven live
For a set-up of this size, we plan the screen layout in advance and make sure all 87 TVs can be driven on time and in sync.
With media players, converters and the right cabling, we make sure live VJ content reaches every TV without hiccups, even during a packed festival day. Setup, connecting and testing the whole video wall all happen beforehand, so during the sets the installation simply does its thing.
Frequently asked questions about a festival video wall
Can a video wall be built around a DJ booth?
Yes. Just like in this Lowlands project, we can build a TV wall around and behind a booth or stage, so the installation becomes part of the set design.
Can a VJ mix the content live?
Yes. We can set up the video wall for live VJ input, like during this project with VJ Switchdoctor, but also for fixed loops or content supplied in advance.
How many TVs fit on a festival stage?
That depends on the available space and the look you're after. For the Lima tent at Lowlands we built a video wall of 87 TVs; for smaller stages, fewer screens work just fine too.
Do you also rent out video walls for other stages, tents or events?
Yes. This Lowlands project is one example of what we do, but we build video walls and TV walls for festivals, trade fairs, club nights and other events. Get in touch to talk about what suits your stage.
Want a video wall or TV wall at your festival?
Want an eye-catching video wall or TV wall on your stage, at your festival or event too? We'll help you think through the number of screens, the set-up around artists or DJs, and the technical side of driving live content.
