Case study
Unicef: an interactive video wall for a brand activation in Hoog Catharijne
For a Unicef brand activation we built a video wall of TVs showing a range of different videos. At the push of a button, all the screens switched to new visuals at once.
The installation stood for several days in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht, as part of the campaign 'Ben jij het goede nieuws?' ('Are you the good news?').
A video wall as the eye-catcher for the campaign
Unicef wanted a striking, interactive activation for the campaign 'Ben jij het goede nieuws?' ('Are you the good news?').
Instead of a single screen with a fixed video, they went for a video wall of TVs, built into a custom-made blue kiosk with the Unicef logo and the campaign branding. That made the installation instantly recognisable among the other shops and stands.
This is one of our custom projects: a set-up fully tailored to the client's goal and brand identity, instead of a standard video wall package.
One push of the button, and the whole wall switches
Visitors could press a big red button themselves. As soon as it was pressed, every TV in the wall jumped to new content at the same time: from campaign footage to a direct call to take action yourself.
That interaction turned the wall into more than just decoration. Visitors became part of the activation themselves, instead of just walking past it.
A video wall with changing content
The screens showed a mix of content: footage from Unicef's fieldwork, the message 'Jij bent het goede nieuws voor een kind in nood' ('You are the good news for a child in need') and a direct call to action with a QR code to unicef.nl/pakje.
By spreading the content across multiple TVs and having it switch on command, the wall kept moving all the time, even without anyone needing to stand next to it.
Tested before the wall left the building
For custom installations like this, we build and thoroughly test the interaction in our own workshop first. The trigger button, the content switching and the control of all the screens were already up and running before the wall went to the location.
That way we know for sure the installation just works on location, day in, day out, without one of us having to stand next to it all the time.
Several days in Hoog Catharijne, Utrecht
The video wall stood for several days in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht, in full view of passing shoppers. A busy public location like this calls for an installation that's sturdy and keeps running without any fuss, day after day.
Frequently asked questions about interactive brand activations
Can you build a video wall that responds to a button?
Yes. Just like in this Unicef project, we can link a physical trigger, such as a big button, to the content on the screens. One press and all the TVs switch visuals at the same time.
Is an interactive video wall suitable for a shopping centre or public space?
Yes. This installation stood for several days in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht. We build the set-up so it keeps running reliably without supervision in a busy public location.
Do you also build custom software for activations like this?
Yes. Off-the-shelf software often doesn't quite do what you actually want. For this activation we built the control system ourselves that links the button to switching the content on all screens.
Can you build a video wall for our brand activation too?
Yes, we'd love to. This Unicef project is one example of what we do, but every activation is custom work. Get in touch to talk about what suits your brand, message and location.
Want an interactive video wall for your brand?
Would you like a video wall that responds to your visitors too, with a physical button, sensor or some other interaction? We'll help you think through the concept, the tech and how the content is controlled.
